Hardware [motherboard with BIOS (basic input output system) and memory, hard disk, etc.] is a physical material made by electronics. That defines roughly the power of a computer. Operating system (OS: such as MacOS, Microsoft-Windows) is a big complex of programs, which makes a computer work. You can optionally add peripheral devices for your convenience (such as a printer, a WiFi-airport, etc.) (PC/Mac).

Backup of entire operating system (OS).
Operating system (OS) is usually stable, but isn't absolutely stable. The OS is gone sometimes by an unknown reason. While the physical body of hardware is never gone. So, it is a good idea to make an entire hard disk backup at the time while your computer is running perfectly. Based on our experience, the OS: Windows 3.1/95 restores by the quick and easy hard disk restoration. While at Windows XP the restoration from the backup of entire hard disk didn't work. It is the best to purchase Windows OS disks separately (unregisterd, brand new one) from eBAY.com or local stores, then you are ready for the emergency. In the case of Macintosh OS, re-loading of entire operating system is usually quick and easy.
Storage of documents by ZIP drive or Flash drive.
It is recommended that operating system (OS) and your personal files are physically separated all the time. When you keep your documents in removable disks or drive (ZIP disks and Flash drive), not only you are able to flexibly move around your files, but also that prevents from the loss of your documents in case of OS loss accident. Keep them in ZIP disks or Flash drive, and do occasional CD recording (PC/Mac).
